What is an eSIM?
eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM chip built into your device. No physical card to insert — activate a plan by scanning a QR code or using a carrier app. eSIM technology is now the standard for modern smartphones, replacing the physical SIM tray in many new models.
Built Into Your Device
The eSIM chip is soldered onto the device's motherboard — you can't remove it. This means no more fiddling with tiny SIM cards or needing a paperclip to swap slots.
Instant Activation
Scan a QR code from your carrier, download through a carrier app, or enter an activation code manually — your plan is ready in seconds. No store visits required.
Multiple Profiles
Store several eSIM profiles on one device and switch between them. Keep a personal line, a work line, and a travel plan — all on the same phone.
More Secure
Unlike a physical SIM, an eSIM can't be removed if your phone is stolen. Profiles are encrypted and activation requires carrier verification — making SIM swap attacks much harder.
Travel Friendly
eSIMs are perfect for international travel. Add a local data plan while keeping your home number active on the physical SIM. No roaming fees, no swapping cards at the airport.
Eco-Friendly
No plastic SIM cards to manufacture, ship, or discard. eSIM reduces the environmental footprint of mobile connectivity — fully digital from activation to transfer.

Why eSIM Is Ideal for Travel
eSIM technology was built for people who travel. Here's why it's replacing physical SIMs for international users.
No Roaming Fees
Instead of paying $10–$15/day for international roaming, buy a local or regional eSIM plan for a fraction of the cost. Providers like Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, and Mogo offer data plans for 190+ countries. Check eSIM compatible phones before you book.
Keep Your Home Number Active
With Dual SIM (physical SIM + eSIM), your regular number stays active for calls and texts while the eSIM handles data abroad. No one needs to know you've switched networks — and no missed 2FA codes.
Activate Before You Fly
Download your travel eSIM before departure. It activates when you land. No visiting a carrier store at the airport, no fumbling with tiny SIM cards at 2 AM. Just scan a QR code and you're set.
Check Compatibility First
Not all phones support eSIM, and carrier-locked or regional variants may differ. Our esim compatibility checker detects your exact device automatically — run it before you travel to avoid surprises. Budget tip: iPhone 13+, Pixel 8+, and Galaxy S23+ support dual active eSIMs for multi-region use.
Common eSIM Compatibility Issues
Even if your phone is technically capable, a few things can prevent eSIM from working. Here's what to look out for.
Carrier-Locked Phones
If your phone was purchased through a carrier contract, it may be locked to that network. A locked phone can have an eSIM-capable chip but still reject other carriers' profiles. Contact your carrier to request an unlock before trying a different eSIM.
Regional Variants
Many phones have different eSIM capabilities depending on the region or SKU they were sold in. For example, Samsung Galaxy models sold in China and Hong Kong usually do not support eSIM, while the same phone sold in Europe or the US does. Always verify your exact variant.
Outdated Software
eSIM support is often added or improved through OS updates. If your phone should support eSIM but doesn't show the option, update to the latest iOS or Android version. This is especially common on older Pixels and iPhones that need iOS 12.1+ or Android 9+.
Carrier Does Not Support eSIM
Even if your phone supports eSIM, your carrier may not yet offer it. This is more common with smaller carriers and MVNOs. Check with your carrier directly, or use a third-party eSIM provider like Airalo, Holafly, or Nomad for data-only profiles.
Used or Refurbished Phones
Refurbished phones sometimes have the eSIM chip physically disabled during repair, or the device may have been swapped back to a non-eSIM variant for a specific market. Always verify the exact internal model number, not just the commercial name.
Device Blacklisted
If a device is reported lost, stolen, or has an unpaid balance, carriers may blacklist its IMEI from eSIM activation even if the hardware is compatible. This doesn't affect the checker tool itself, but it will prevent profile activation on that carrier.
How to Activate an eSIM on Your Phone
Setting up an eSIM is simple. Here's how to do it on the most popular devices.
Activate eSIM on iPhone
- 1 Go to Settings > Cellular or (Mobile Data in some regions)
- 2 Tap Add Cellular Plan — your iPhone will offer multiple options
- 3 Choose your activation method based on what your carrier provides:
- 4 Label your plan (e.g., "Personal", "Travel") and choose the default line
- 5 Toggle Turn On This Line — your eSIM is active
iPhone 14 and newer (US models) are eSIM-only with no physical SIM tray, making transfer especially important.
Activate eSIM on Samsung Galaxy
- 1 Open Settings > Connections
- 2 Tap SIM manager
- 3 Tap Add eSIM
- 4 Choose Scan QR code from your carrier or Enter activation code
- 5 Confirm and label the plan — you're set
Menu names may vary slightly by One UI version and region.

- 2 Tap SIMs, then tap + Add another SIM
- 3 Select Download a SIM instead if prompted
- 4 Scan the carrier QR code or use the carrier app from the Play Store
- 5 Activate and choose default preferences
Pixel 3a and newer support eSIM. Pixel 8+ support dual active eSIMs.
Dual eSIM & Transferring Between Phones
Two common questions: can I use multiple eSIMs, and can I move one to another device?
What is Dual eSIM?
Dual eSIM means your phone can run two eSIM profiles at the same time — both active. This is different from storing multiple profiles. Many phones can store 5+ eSIM profiles (iPhone 15 can store up to 8), but only newer devices can actually use two simultaneously. Popular dual eSIM devices: iPhone 13+, Samsung Galaxy S23+, Google Pixel 8+.
Can You Move an eSIM to Another Phone?
Yes — but the process depends on your device and carrier. On iPhone iOS 16+, the easiest method is during Quick Start: bring your old iPhone near the new one, and the eSIM transfers automatically. On Android, you usually need to contact your carrier for a new QR code, or use the carrier app. Some carriers allow self-transfer via their app.
Using a Physical SIM and eSIM Together
Most eSIM phones support Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) — one physical SIM plus one active eSIM. This is the most common configuration for travelers: keep your home number on nano-SIM for calls, add a local data eSIM abroad. Note: iPhone 14/15/16 US models are eSIM-only — no physical SIM tray at all.
eSIM Compatibility by Brand (2024–2026)
Apple: iPhone XS and newer (2018+). Samsung: Galaxy S20 and newer, most Z Flip/Fold 2021+. Google: Pixel 3a and newer. Other Android: select OnePlus, Motorola, Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo models. Always verify — carrier and regional variants may differ. Use our checker above to be sure.
